Auckland gears up for next America’s Cup with 2021 with New Year’s Day Kawau regatta
AUCKLAND is preparing for a renaissance of its former America’s Cup www.americascup.com glory.
The yachting regatta will, like its last editions in Australasia, drive a huge fleet of corporate events, conferences, incentive rewards, competitions and community fun....Aucklanders believe in getting behind the America’s Cup with style and gusto.
At the centre of it will be the America’s Cup holder, the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron www.rnzys.org.nz, while Emirates Team NZ http://emirates-team-new-zealand.americascup.com/ will defend the Cup on the squadron’s behalf.
The Challenger of Record is Circolo della Vela Sicilia, which will be represented by team Luna Rossa Challenge.
For the NZYS it will be an extra-special time, celebrating its 150th anniversary.
Formed in 1871 and now one of only seven in the world, The Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron’s sesquicentenary marks a legacy of world-class performance that is globally unrivalled in sailing history. The RNZYS was granted Royal patronage by the British Admiralty in 1902 and with it the right to fly the blue ensign.
Aaron Young, rear commodore of the RNZYS says “the 150-year legacy of the RNZYS is worthy of more than just one event at one time, so we are marking this with a year of celebratory events and occasions, the pinnacle of which will be the hosting of the 36th America’s Cup.
“The stars have aligned for a huge year for us.”
The lineup of events is yet to be finalised but will be launched with the 2021 New Year’s Day Regatta at Kawau Island in the Hauraki Gulf off Auckland. This is tipped to attract the attention of visiting superyachts that already have Auckland firmly within their sights for the period.
Americas Cup 36 will run from December 2020 through March 2021, with associated small yacht events.
An offshore race from Sydney will be arriving mid-January 2021. It will be hosted by RNZYS in partnership with an Australian club following the Sydney to Hobart race.
And a trans-Tasman regatta between leading Australian and NZ yacht clubs is in the planning – 10 clubs are expected to take part with non-youth crews.
For a full 12 months the Auckland waterfront will be vibrating with colourful action – on Waitemata Harbour, Hauraki Gulf and ashore, both in the city and bays - especially in the first quarter of 2021.
