Wellington Museum opens Te Taiao Nature exhibition May 11

Wellington’s Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa’s will open its new exhibition Te Taiao Nature on 11th May 2019. Te Papa’s new NZ$12 million nature zone will create an immersive experience through the natural world of Aotearoa New Zealand, combining cutting-edge science with ‘matauranga Maori’ (Maori knowledge).

Te Papa will feature a priceless moa egg (there are only 36 in the world of which Te Papa has four in its collection) at the heart of the spectacular new 1,400 square-metre zone space. One of th moa eggs is of huge international cultural significance as it was discovered in the grave of the earliest known Maori - 700 years ago!

Te Taiao Nature will feature more than 1,200 collection items from New Zealand’s natural world, along with new interactive experiences, including ‘creating your own tsunami’ and ‘weighing in against a giant moa’ (extinct bird).

This will replace Te Papa’s previous nature area, which closed in April 2018. While the exhibition is completely new, two old favourites will return: The colossal squid and a revamped Earthquake House.

The exhibition will split into four areas: Te Aka When Unique NZ, where visitors experience wildlife and the split between Zealandia and Gondwana; Ruaumoko Active Land; Te Kohanga Nest: A 70-square-metre, 40-metre-high ‘nest’ woven from recycled materials holding the rare moa egg and Nga Kaitiaki Guardians, which focuses on some of the big environmental challenges
